The 25th Anniversary of the Brecon Jazz Festival in 2008 saw the launch of this exciting campaign to commission a sculpture. The sculpture will commemorate George Melly’s relationship with Brecon, his role in the founding of the Jazz Festival and as President of the Contemporary Art Society for Wales. The aim is to honour the man and his sense of fun, his mistress jazz, his interest in Surrealist art and his passion for fishing.

The aim is for the sculpture to be sited on the Promenade in Brecon at the confluence of the River Usk and River Hondu. It is intended that the sculpture will make a strong artistic statement, one that will raise interest in contemporary art, attract local, national and international visitors to the area and support and add value to the visual art collection at Brecknock Museum & Art Gallery, the town’s flourishing arts organisations and the Art Beat Trail.

It should be of a quality which complements the Brecknock Museum & Art Gallery’s existing modern and contemporary art collections, which include work by Graham Sutherland, Augustus John, John Piper, David Jones, Martin Bloch and Josef Herman. The Museum is one of the few in Britain with a jazz art collection, which reflects the Festival’s considerable impact upon the town.

Organising Committee/Trustees
The George Melly Sculpture Appeal was set up in July 2008; Liz Elston who was one of the founders of the Brecon Jazz Festival in 1984 chairs its Organising Committee/Trustees of seven. Robert Macdonald, a highly respected painter who lives in the Brecon Beacons has specific responsibility for overseeing the artistic process. David Brockwell a local businessman leads on fund-raising.
The primary role of the Organising Committee is to fundraise and commission a sculpture to commemorate George Melly. Other members are Elizabeth Jeffreys, Vice-chair; Oscar Williams, Treasurer; Brenda Goodley, Secretary and Cllr Martin Weale.

Photography
The black and white photographs on this site were taken by Gena Davies at the 1984 Brecon Jazz Festival, the first, and again at 1996 Festival. Gena has agreed to sell prints of these with all the proceeds going to the Appeal. If you want to purchase a copy please e-mail us and we will send you the further details.
